Hundreds of Anwia and Teleku-Bokazo residents in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region have benefited from outreach programs sponsored by the community trust fund.
The project, spearheaded by a team of medical doctors from the United States and Ghana under the Ghana Association for Medical Aid (GAMA), collaborated with the Anwia/Teleku-Bokazo Trust Fund.
Established in 2013, the Anwia/Teleku-Bokazo Trust Fund aims to provide socio-economic and infrastructure interventions for the communities of Anwia and Teleku-Bokazo in the Ellembelle District in the Western Region of Ghana.
Dr. Andrew O. Baddoo, the team lead, highlighted some of the medical problems encountered, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and gynecological issues, among others.
“The most common cases we saw were uncontrollable blood pressure and diabetes, which could be attributed to poor diet,” Dr. Baddoo remarked.
He noted that many patients were unaware of their blood pressure challenges, with some presenting readings as high as 220/110. Additionally, patients mentioned they were unable to sustain medication due to financial constraints after the initial supply from previous medical facilities.
“Our recommendation to the trust management is to ensure the sustainability of the medical outreach and establish a dedicated pharmacy for those unable to afford medication,” Dr. Baddoo suggested.
The team also highlighted the need to address women’s health issues, including cervical cancer, and recommended support from the trust for the community.
The medical outreach not only screened beneficiaries and made recommendations but also ensured that those in need received medication. Community members commended the management of the fund, acknowledging the positive impact of the initiative on the community’s health and well-being.
